Chu delivered an unqualified smash this winter just as the box office needed it most with part one of Universal’s “Wicked.” The long-anticipated adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical delivered the punch at the turnstiles that exhibition needed to salvage the 2024 box office. The triumph was especially sweet for Universal Pictures as part two of “Wicked” is waiting in the wings for release in November. The movie’s success has also demonstrated that Chu has a deft touch with a range of genres as a helmer and producer. He had already rocketed onto Hollywood’s director A-list with 2018’s “Crazy Rich Asians.” Among Chu’s next percolating projects is a Britney Spears biopic, also for Universal.
