Musical duo Sofi Tukker joined “Live From My Den” as they embarked on their world tour for their latest album “Bread.” The duo, made up of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, solidified their presence in the industry by hosting daily livestreams throughout the pandemic that propelled their careers. Their style is a Brazilian techno fusion that emerged from Hawley-Weld’s infatuation with bossa nova growing up.
“We spent a lot of time in Brazil for the making of this album, which is really cool. But I would say the goal was also revealed to us over time, like the music that we were making told us what it wanted to be, says Hawley-Weld. “Then suddenly we were like, ‘Oh my God, all of this music together actually does fit and does tell a story and does feel cohesive.'”
The Brazilian influence is evident throughout their album, which includes tracks like “Bread,” “Jacaré” and more.
The duo met in college and decided to form a band and officially pursue music the day before graduation. When the pandemic came, they moved to Florida and started livestreaming their projects.
“What was really cool about that period of time was that we were going into the studio and then livestreaming, like back to back to back, because we were livestreaming every day. We go into the studio, we’d make something, and then we’d immediately go test it out,” says Hawley-Weld, to which Halpern adds, “And by ‘in the studio’ she means ‘the other room.'” Hawley-Weld adds, “But as a result, there was this connection with people where they were hearing our process really up close.”
Eventually, “Bread” had a complete tracklist, a desired message and a concrete idea of how to visualize it. “We had this whole vision of the steps and the dancers and the photographer that captures these dancers so beautifully. We’re like, ‘Well, what if it’s called ‘Bread,’ and I’m just wearing a gown made of bread? And suddenly, you know, we injected this sense of lightness and humor that I think also has become really important to us,” says Hawley-Weld.
